What is TD Music Artist in Residence?

MacEwan University and the Department of Music, in collaboration with TD Bank Group, is hosting a two-week all-inclusive professional artist development program August 6th through August 18th, 2024. The TD Music Artist in Residence at MacEwan University program is open to emerging and up-and-coming songwriters, producers, beat-makers, and band leaders who are residents of Alberta and are 18+.

Who Will The Program Serve?

This program meets the needs of emerging music artists who come from low-income backgrounds or experience other significant barriers to accessing post-secondary education. With IDEA as our guiding principle, program marketing will specifically target underserved groups and individuals.

What Problem Are We Solving?

Music artists from underserved populations lack the financial and material resources and/or the academic preparation to access post-secondary music education. For some musical artists, formal education is a crucial step in their career development. The current system does not serve these artists well. The current system is not inclusive.

How Are We Solving This Problem?

The TD Music Artist in Residence at MacEwan University program fundamentally changes the story for emerging music artists from underserved populations. While many of these artists have started to develop their craft independent of formal education, they are at a disadvantage – they do not have the financial and material resources and/or the academic preparation to take their skills to a higher level.

  • The TD Music Artist in Residence at MacEwan University program invites participants from underserved communities across Alberta. The group of participants will reflect MacEwan’s commitment to IDEA (inclusion, diversity, equity, access). This intensive two-week summer training program will immerse emerging artists in experiential learning, balanced with private studio and classroom instruction, ultimately focusing on the production and marketing of their music. Workshops and master classes include performance instruction (private lessons and group work), songwriting, recording, production, and music career management. Artists will live in the modern MacEwan residence building while participating in this program. The program is entirely free of charge for the selected participants.

All workshops and master classes are taught by the internationally renowned educators who teach in the MacEwan University Department of Music (Faculty of Fine Arts and Communications) and are supported by MacEwan student mentors who will interact with students and faculty in a variety of supporting roles.

Emerging artists will be connected to mentors. Mentors are professionals in their respective fields.

Each participant will have the opportunity to record and produce their music (one song), in MacEwan’s world-class recording studio. The experience that artists gain through this process is invaluable. Artists will work in a variety of collaborative environments with other participants, and industry professionals from MacEwan University faculty, who will oversee recording and production.
